UK’s first ‘hybrid-hall’ officially opens following £60m investment

The University Quarter Housing project has been officially opened in Hull following a £60m investment.

The development has seen the creation of 200 new homes along with two refurbished Halls of Residence for University of Hull students.

Dubbed the UK’s first hybrid-hall, the University Quarter combines independent living with the benefits of living in hall accommodation such as CCTV, 24/7 staff support and regular security patrols.

The University Quarter has been formed through a partnership between the University of Hull and Kexgill to provide students with new accommodation and support within a five-minute walk from the campus.

Kexgill already owns and operates 300 student bedrooms in the UQ– Cranbrook Court and The Trees, which will link up with the new University Quarter development.

The project will run over the next two years, through to the end of 2020, with new cluster en-suite accommodation introduced every week. The scheme will house over 1,300 students, partly in 200 brand new and fully refurbished Edwardian properties.

Richard Stott, managing director of the UQ and Kexgill Group, said: “The University Quarter is more than just student accommodation – we are creating a thriving, supportive community.

“This project has been built with the needs of modern-day students at the very heart of it and we’re proud to generating a unique environment that provides students with the right blend of independence and support they need to thrive in stylish cluster accommodation, designed with their needs in mind.

“As well as providing students with the best possible living experience no matter what the budget, we’re here to support them at every stage of their tenancy.”

The University Quarter will also be offering sober and quiet accommodation options in collaboration with the charity, Recovery Connections. Students who don’t drink or are simply looking for a quieter way to spend their tenancy will be paired with similar housemates.

Anji Gardiner, director of Student Services at the University of Hull, added: “The University Quarter Housing offers students everything they need from their accommodation within a five-minute walk from the campus. We’ve partnered with an international company that has built its reputation around customer care to ensure University of Hull students are supported at every stage of their tenancy.

“The showroom on the corner of Salmon Grove is now open and students can register their interest in new properties as they become available and take a look at some of the fantastic features of these new homes.”

The creation of the University Quarter has already resulted in a positive impact on the local area, with 50 contractors currently working on-site.
