My Yorkshire: Scott Brant, director of Vizulate Digital

Scott Brant is director at Vizulate Digital, based in Brighouse

Where do you live/where are you from?

I’m from Huddersfield but moved the short distance to Mirfield in 2007 and have lived there ever since. It’s a great and friendly small town with a real community feel to it.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

We have a few places that we like to go to on a weekend with my three-year-old daughter. But my favourite place is actually the North Yorkshire coast. We have been to Filey for a stay-cation for the last three years and will no doubt be going back again next summer. It’s a stunning coast and we find it really relaxing.

What’s still on your to-do list in the region?

There are a few things we’d like to do as a family but I know my daughter would love Brimham Rocks and I have never been, so I think that’s next on our hit list!

What is the most memorable meal you’ve had in Yorkshire?

Just recently we went to a tapas restaurant in Holmfirth called Aldea. It was pretty special tapas considering we were in the heart of Yorkshire.

What is your most ‘Yorkshire’ trait?

Definitely stubbornness. Not an attractive trait really. I refer to think of it as ‘strong-willed’.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region?

I don’t know about favourite, but on a recent visit to Scarborough I discovered the town became the first town in England to be fired upon by the Germans in WW1.  I didn’t know this but probably should have.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

As a Mirfield-man, not to mention sci-fi and Huddersfield Town fan, I can’t look much further than Sir Patrick Stewart. (Patrick Stewart? He’s from Mirfield don’t you know?)

First experience of Yorkshire?

I grew up in a small rural village in Huddersfield called Houses Hill, there were only a couple of other kids my age and we used to spend our days in the many woods, streams, hills and fields we had on our doorstep. This epitomises Yorkshire for me.

Worst thing about Yorkshire?

Customer service. The further south you go the better and more professional the customer service is. We’re friendly enough, but I’d take efficient over friendly any day.

One thing you’d steal from another UK region for Yorkshire if you could?

London’s (or any major southern city’s) transport infrastructure. I went to London last Christmas for the first time in almost a decade and the transport is just so much more efficient (and enjoyable) to be on. Leeds train station during morning rush hour right now is a shambles.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

The people. We’re a bit set in our ways. The landscape is far better.
