Tech-gym set to open its doors

A high-end, high-tech gym brand is set to make its debut in Leeds city centre today.

Following an investment of more than £500,000, Fitness Space will be launching on Little Neville Street in Granary Wharf .

It is a digital gym concept which provides all members with an app and smartband to personalise their own fitness programme. Once joined, members also get their DNA tested to determine the most suitable type training for them according to their genetic makeup.

Adam Haines, the general manager of Fitness Space Leeds Central, told The BusinessDesk.com that there is “nothing similar” to this fitness brand in Leeds despite there being such a “saturated health and fitness market.”

Commenting on the decision to launch in Leeds, he said: “What we’ve realised there isn’t anything that is offering the same level of service that we are.

“As an example, nearly every gym in Leeds doesn’t include personal training as standard in the membership, it has be an additional cost or members have to find their own PT. With us, personal training is included in the membership as standard even down to the level of kit. So the way we are different is what made us decide Leeds is a good market for us to open in.”

Haines explained that the £500,000 investment has gone into supply “all top of the range gym and touch screen equipment.”

He added: “Every single member gets their own fitness app where their programmes are loaded into and they are also supplied with a smartband, which is synced to the gym machines. So even when a member doesn’t have a coach with them, by using the smartband and the programme a coach has selected, they can just log in and get going.”

The majority of Fitness Space sites are based in and around London, with only one northern gym in York.  Haines added: “Because we are slightly more expensive than some of our competitors, we also need to make sure people understand what they get included in their membership. However, when we explain that members do get personal training, hot yoga sessions and online programmes as standard, they will know we are next level.”

Members can take an optional DNA test. Haines said: “We take a mouth swab, send it off to a lab, and within seven to 10 working days we receive the lab’s results. We will then use the results to determine what sort of training is best for you, whether its power training;strength training or endurance training and it will also give us an idea of the member’s fitness and lung capacity.”

Once Fitness Space Central Leeds has established itself in the city, Haines revealed that the brand will “absolutely look to expand” in the area.
