Yorkshire’s Top 20 Technology Companies revealed

The region’s most pioneering and innovative technology companies in the Mills & Reeve Top Tech Yorkshire has now been revealed.

Launched last month, in partnership with TheBusinessdesk.com, Top Tech Yorkshire is designed to celebrate dynamic companies who are putting the county on the map as a growing hub for technological development and innovation.

That may be by developing world leading technology, disrupting the market, or using technology and services to give their clients a competitive edge.

Entrants were judged on technological innovation, leadership, growth and financial performance, client service and delivery and employee engagement.

Around 40 entries were submitted from a diverse range of technology companies across the region each demonstrating why their cutting-edge technology deserved a place in Top Tech Yorkshire

The expert panel, made up of some of the leaders in the technology sector, spent many hours deliberating each entry. Competition was fierce, however, after some deliberation, the entries were whittled down, and Yorkshire’s Top Tech 20 were selected.

The Top Tech 20 was launched last night at The Shears Yard in Leeds where the entrants celebrated with all things Yorkshire including gin and ales from the region and Yorkshire pudding.

Among those listed in the Top Tech 20 were Leeds-based software security firm AppCheck.

Sales and operations director, Lloyd Devey, said: “To be named as one of Yorkshire’s top 20 technology companies is a fantastic achievement and is testament to what AppCheck has achieved over the last few years.

“The level of technology talent in Yorkshire easily rivals that of London and is demonstrated by the quality of companies here tonight.”

AppCheck’s sales and operations director Lloyd Devey and sales manager Ben Jackson.

Also in the Top Tech 20 was York-based clinical data management system PCMIS. Interim CEO Byron George said: “We are delighted to be recognised as one of Yorkshire top technology companies.

“The region is a trailblazer for many sectors including digital health technology.  The Top Tech 20 demonstrates that Yorkshire is a premier hub for technology.”

Mills & Reeve partner Paul Johnson said: “The response has been fantastic, and what has struck me has been the quality of businesses that have submitted applications.  We have received entries from a diverse range of companies that are disrupting industries such as healthcare, finance, recruitment, arts, logistics and entertainment.

“Often when people think of tech hubs, cities like Cambridge, Manchester and London spring to mind. Our mission was to highlight our very own cutting-edge tech companies and the talent behind these businesses – promoting Yorkshire as a major player on the UK and international stage.”

The Top Tech judging panel included:

Richard Carter, managing director, Equiniti Credit Services (previously CEO of Nostrum Group which was acquired by Equiniti in 2017)

Dr Mark Wyatt, investment director, Mercia Fund Managers

Richard Faulkner, managing director, Technology Banking at Silicon Valley Bank

Phil Smith, Research Analyst (Technology), SP Angel

Mark Fahy, former head of UK SMEs at the London Stock Exchange

Josh Robson, head of policy and public relations at the ScaleUp Institute

Shubhu Patil, principal associate in the corporate team at the Leeds office of Mills & Reeve, who has a focus on tech sector businesses.
