My Yorkshire: Matthew Grant, audit and accounts partner at Garbutt & Elliott

Where do you live/where are you from?

York – I’ve only ever lived within the same square mile on the outskirts of the City and I’m quite happy with that! I can’t see me living anywhere else.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

I enjoy trips to all parts of Yorkshire, but I think a family day trip to the East Coast takes some beating. Brimham Rocks is also a favourite – I have lots of memories of great days out there.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

There’s plenty of pubs and breweries I’ve still not visited! I also don’t know the Dales as well as the North York Moors, so would like to explore that National Park a bit more – preferably via pub walks, as I need to carrot to be dangled in front of me!

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

I’m more into beer than food, so it would have to be my wedding meal in the Merchant Taylors Hall in York – a hog roast with all the trimmings followed by Yorkshire cheeses and washed down with Yorkshire ale. Awesome.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

Probably my straight-talking. I tend to say how I see it, even when sometimes I shouldn’t.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.

The highest pub in the UK is the Tan Inn in the Yorkshire Dales which is 1,700 feet above sea level.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

York Minster is absolutely stunning and has to take my top spot. Sorry Wallace & Gromit.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

Our local authorities’ inability to agree on a “One Yorkshire” devolution deal that would see us have the same regional powers that are enjoyed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. I don’t want us to be left behind.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

The relative success of Lancashire football teams. Grrr.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

Probably our friendliness. I’ve no doubt it is far superior to the south, but I still encounter plenty of rudeness and unfriendliness. I suppose the offenders could be southerners up here though!!
