Frozen food chain Iceland invests £1m in city centre flagship store

Frozen food chain Iceland is investing £1m in opening a new flagship store at the Merrion Centre, the Leeds city centre retail and leisure destination.

Opening in Spring 2019, the new store will be located on the 10,000 sq ft site of the centre’s former Poundworld unit, creating 25 jobs.

The Merrion Centre store will be the 98th in a new generation of Iceland stores and will feature a more modern store layout and design, a new style of fascia and frontage, digital signage, LED lighting, improved in-store navigation and new checkouts.

The new concept store will also carry a wider product range than older Iceland stores, with an expanded offer across all ranges from frozen and chilled food to fresh fruit and vegetables, food cupboard staples, and beers, wines and spirits.

Neil Hayes, Iceland’s marketing director, said: “The success of our new concept stores has given us the confidence to consider opening completely new Iceland stores in areas where we were unrepresented – and we are confident that our first Leeds city centre store at the Merrion Centre will be a fantastic addition to the current mix of retailers available.

“Our award-winning Iceland own label product ranges and Power of Frozen marketing campaign are earning us growing recognition for quality and convenience as well as value, and our new concept store will undoubtedly add to our appeal, attracting many new customers who would never have considered shopping at Iceland before.”

Helen Green, associate director for Town Centre Securities, owners of the Merrion Centre, added: “We are thrilled to announce that Iceland has chosen the Merrion Centre to open its newest concept store, and are confident that the varied mix of families, students and office workers that live and work within the immediate vicinity will welcome the addition of this leading household brand with its innovative, value and convenient frozen food.

“In addition, the Merrion Centre is passionate about sustainability, and as Iceland recognises the important part that frozen food can play in cutting waste, we are confident their industry-leading pledge to eliminate plastic packaging from their own label food by 2023 will further align their businesses core values with our own”.
