Weekender: Yorkshire and the Humber consumers to increase spend by 19% over Black Friday

Consumers in Yorkshire and the Humber are preparing to spend an average of £239 at stores and online during this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping periods, accoridng to PwC’s latest survey.

The analysis found that 13% of consumers are definitely intending to buy something while searching for a bargain over the weekend, and a further 26% are open to offers depending on the deals, the analysis finds.

Despite this, Yorkshire and the Humber shoppers’ preference for the promotional weekend is on the increase. The £239 average projected spend for 2018 has increased by 19% on their 2017 spend.

Half of Yorkshire and the Humber consumers, however, state they are not interested at all with 12% warning they would be purposely avoiding shopping altogether.

Lisa Hooker, consumer markets leader at PwC, said: “Black Friday continues to establish itself an important and much anticipated shopping event for many Yorkshire and the Humber shoppers.

“As ‘practical gifting’ makes Christmas more virtuous, Black Friday becomes our one chance for fun and frivolous spending, and to treat ourselves and our families.”

PwC also found that over the Black Friday period, 58% of shoppers said electricals retailers are where they will spend the most money. Behind this is Christmas stocking fillers and treats, where 46% expect to make a purchase, followed by clothing (40%), toys (30%) and health and beauty (29%).

Hooker added: “For some product categories, Black Friday is set to become more important than Christmas; most notably electricals, but also fashion, toys and beauty.

“So those retailers that have announced that they will not be participating in any discounting over this period risk their customers walking, or clicking, straight past to their competitors.”
