My Yorkshire: Rachel Walker, founder of the Breton Shirt Company

Rachel Walker is the founder of The Breton Shirt Company of Knaresborough.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I was born in Harrogate and now live in the country in between Harrogate and York.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

I love to take the children to Runswick Bay, our favourite beach where we enjoy the sea air, the beautiful sands and spectacular views. We always pack a flask of hot coffee and pick up some Yorkshire fish and chips for the return journey.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
This year it will be to go to one of the German Christmas Markets and take in the festive spirit.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
Let’s be honest we are pretty spoilt for choice in Yorkshire.  Of late I enjoyed the Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton.  So much so that my daughter now works there!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
Yorkshire friendliness, as a global brand were proud to take our Yorkshire friendliness abroad.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.
I heard that if Yorkshire had entered the 2012 Olympic Games in London as a country then we would have finished 12th in the medal table!

What/who is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

It’s got to be Geoffrey Boycott hasn’t it?  He is so consistent and enjoys the mischief of portraying himself as Yorkshire born and bred!

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
When we flooded out of our beautiful Knaresborogh home in late 2000.  We never felt the same about our beautiful riverside property again.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
The beaches around Lytham St Annes – a paradise and could do with them being 50 miles closer to home!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

Nothing! Yorkshire lives up to its reputation, we’re proud to be based here and spread the word about our great county globally.
