£7.5m contract awarded for redevelopment of East Yorkshire leisure facility

A £7.5m contract to redevelop an East Yorkshire leisure centre has been awarded to construction firm, Hobson and Porter.

Work on the site of East Riding Leisure Hornsea is expected to begin in the New Year, with a reopening planned for Easter 2020.

Hull-based Hobson and Porter of Hull won the contract after completing a number of projects, including the refurbishment and extension of East Riding Leisure Haltemprice in Anlaby.

This latest project includes a complete refurbishment and extension of the leisure centre with new facilities including an extended Tone Zone with 60 stations on the first floor overlooking the promenade; a new extended café area; new  changing rooms; two new squash courts; and a dedicated Spin and Exercise Studio.

The pool area and changing rooms will also be refurbished.

Hornsea’s library, customer service centre and resource centre will be relocating to the new facility, and there is also provision to relocate the Children’s Centre there.

Part-funded from the £3.77m Coastal Communities Fund awarded to Hornsea, the two-storey extension project is part of a wider regeneration programme for the sea front.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said: “The redeveloped East Riding Leisure Hornsea represents the largest single investment this council has ever made in the town. I am very excited that work is now about to start on this transformational project.

“We are committed to providing the people of Hornsea and visitors to the resort with the best possible facilities and to ensure they have continued access to the services they value for many years to come.

“The creation of similar multi-service centres has proved to be successful in other parts of the East Riding, providing the public with improved services while reducing running costs for the council by having a number of services under one roof. It has also led to increased usage and substantially improved the offer to our residents.”
