Plans approved for new retail and leisure scheme

Outline plans have been approved for a new retail development on a site just north of Shipley town centre.

Located on the Airedale Mills site on Ives Street, the scheme will include a new foodstore, two retail units and coffee shop with a drive-thru facility.

The proposals also comprise car parking, servicing, landscaping and associated works.

Back in 2013, the land was subject to a planning application from Sainsbury’s. However, this was refused by Bradford Council.

The site has been occupied in recent years by Cardinal Shopfitting + Systems. Whilst the business partly relocated to Fernhill House in Bradford in 2016, it still uses the premises for storage purposes.

The submitted plans state that the foodstore will occupy the western part of the site, with the two other retail units to the east.

It is also proposed that the drive-thru coffee shop is located on the south western part of the site, close to Salts Mill Road.

The planning application stated: “The proposal would also help improve consumer choice in the area, bring back into active use a previously developed site, and support a greater number of jobs.

“The redevelopment of the site would allow its owner, Cardinal, to reinvest in its business, thereby helping to support 170 existing local jobs and provide for its future planned growth.”
