My Yorkshire: Darren Brock, Sheards Wealth Management

Darren Brock is a Financial Advisor at Sheards Wealth Management, based in Huddersfield.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I’m originally from Leeds but home now is in a village called Robin Hood, in the middle of Yorkshire’s Rhubarb Triangle.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

York. It really is a fascinating place with so much rich history. It was not only the capital for the Vikings, but also the Roman’s before them.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

I’ve only visited The Peak District briefly, so I would love to spend more time exploring the area.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

Probably the most expensive one… which came with a bottle of Châteauneuf du pape!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

Being tight with money (but isn’t everyone?!) It certainly helps in my role as a Financial Adviser.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.

Daniel Dafoe’s Robinson Crusoe was from Yorkshire. Dracula landed at Whitby when the Demeter ran aground in Bram Stoker’s novel. (And for more trivia, ‘Bram’ is short for Abraham)

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

There’s so many… like Grimshaw, Hockney, Moore, Priestley etc. But as a music follower, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin is one, who usually falls under the radar. Though he has spent decades in America, he is actually from Doncaster and is considered the world’s greatest Jazz Fusion musician. Jeff Beck called him ‘the world’s greatest living guitarist’.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

Can I say the M62 on a morning and evening?

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

The secret martial art of Ecky-Thump. Look it up if you don’t know what I am talking about!!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

I’m not particularly a fan of the ‘God’s own county’ phrase as there are many beautiful parts in other counties. Personally, the idea that a Yorkshire Pudding can only be made by a person born in Yorkshire is nonsense. My mothers were excellent, and she came from Stoke!
