Nine Yorkshire businesses named on national fast-growing profits list

Nine companies headquartered in Yorkshire have been included on a league table of British private companies with the fastest-growing profits.

Published this weekend, the Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 features six new Yorkshire entries. Last year, the region had six on the list in total.

The nine firms to feature this year have made a strong contribution to the local economy, together employing 4,170 staff and have achieving combined profits of £65m.

Making its first appearance on the league table is SportsShoes.com, which sells more than 12,000 running and fitness products to customers in 100 countries. The Shipley-based group was founded in 1982 by former Bradford City and Bristol Rovers footballer Bruce Bannister, and is led today by his son Brett. Profits grew by an average of 82% a year to £4.4m in 2018.

Appearing for the fourth time is Ilkley-based NG Bailey. The group provides mechanical and electrical engineering and facilities maintenance — recent projects include Manchester University’s engineering campus and the rail control centre at London Bridge. Profits grew by an average of 90% a year to £13.7m in 2018.

The companies in Yorkshire appear alongside well-known British brands, including fitness clothing retailer Gymshark, luxury yacht builder Princess Yachts and jewellery and watch retailer The Watches of Switzerland Group. Others are connected to star names, such as Hippodrome Casino on London’s Leicester Square, at which Harry Houdini, Frank Sinatra and Julie Andrews have all performed.
