M62 weekend closure scheduled

The M62 westbound is set to be closed over a full weekend in June as Highways England carries out essential repair work.

The road maintenance organisation said that Ardsley Railway Bridge, which sits between junctions 29 and 28 of the westbound M62, needs to be re-waterproofed to prevent deterioration.

Work includes new drainage, resurfacing and reapplying white lines and road studs.

The motorway will be fully closed westbound from 8pm on Friday 14 June to 5am on Monday 17 June.

Highways England project manager Dan Edwards said: “Safety is our top priority and with that in mind, it’s crucial that we carry out this repair work now to stop the bridge deteriorating to a point that it could become a safety issue.

“We have worked closely with Leeds City Council to choose a weekend that doesn’t conflict with any major events, and we have selected a time of year when we see less traffic.

“Picking a weekend in June also gives us the best chance of getting the dry weather we need to carry out the waterproofing.”

The diversion for drivers wishing to continue west will be to head north on the M1 and along the M621 before re-joining the M62 at junction 27.

Traffic is likely to be busiest between 10am and 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday, and Highways England is advising drivers to allow an extra 30 minutes for their journey during these peak hours and 15 minutes outside of the peak times when travelling this stretch of road.
