New steel engineering company is on Point

A steel engineering company has been launched in Hull that will step into the gap that will be left by the closure of Point Engineering.

10 jobs have been created at Point Eng, nine of which are from the business which announced last December that it would close .

Point Eng, started by managing director Paul Waters, has been launched to provide bespoke steel engineering products and services.

Waters has purchased the intellectual property and specialist equipment of Point Engineering (Hull) to start the company, which he says will focus on providing a problem-solving approach along with “excellent service levels and workmanship”.

“It has been my intention to have my own engineering business, so Point Engineering (Hull) Ltd’s closure offered me an opportunity,” said Waters, who worked for 16 years at the company as production manager.

“I am very pleased that I’m in the position to employ some of the accomplished team and commence the journey of shaping my new company. The intention is to grow through providing a fantastic service and through innovative approaches to client projects.”

Point Eng has already secured contracts in the marine, renewables and manufacturing sectors in Yorkshire, the south coast, the Shetland Islands and Sweden.
It will continue operating from Lee Smith Street, East Hull.

Waters intends to gain further contracts manufacturing products for the maritime industries building on the company’s location close the Humber ports.

In December Point Engineering Hull (Ltd) said it would close, with the loss of 22 jobs following a difficult trading period.

The business had worked on big projects both in the UK and overseas, including a football stadium in Qatar which will play host to the 2022 World Cup.

Correction: The original version of this article incorrectly described the original Point Engineering company as “failed”. We are happy to make clear that it is being wound down due to the retirement of the owner.
