Plans for £45m motorway services revealed

Motorway service operator Roadchef has submitted plans to Selby District Council deliver a £45m, motorway services area at Junction 42 of the A1(M) in Selby, which could create 300 jobs.

The proposals would see a 5.2 hectare site transformed into a facility to serve travellers along the A1(M) corridor; featuring a farm shop, food and beverage outlets, including a drive-thru coffee shop; dedicated parking and restroom facilities for HGVs and a petrol filling station.

Roadchef said the plans have been submitted in response to growing demands from nearby employers and residents to provide overnight or long stay parking and facilities for HGVs drivers delivering to Sherburn in Elmet industrial park.

Roadchef’s Dr Ian McKay said: “Our team has worked hard with Selby District Council and other consultees to bring forward an application that truly delivers for the district.  Not only would the MSA create up to 300 permanent jobs but it would boost the local economy by around £356m during its operational lifetime.

“We have also identified a real demand to provide overnight HGV parking for vehicles delivering to the Sherburn in Elmet industrial park.  The park currently has over 1,180 two-way deliveries by HGVs per day – and this is due to increase with new planning consents extending the employment area.  Some of the HGV drivers currently use local roads and laybys to park overnight prior to delivering the next day, because there are insufficient overnight parking facilities in the area.  The MSA would provide 74 HGV parking spaces initially with plans to increase to 101 spaces, to help alleviate what is a real concern locally.

“We hope that the local community will support our plans and look forward to talking with them about the scheme.”
