Revised plans for hotel and restaurant in historic York street

Proposals for a new hotel and restaurant in central York have been redesigned.

Plans to redevelop 105 to 127 Micklegate – the Jinnah Restaurant, Minster Car Hire and Bar 127 buildings – were first put forward in February by developer North Star. Following feedback from residents, the council and other interested parties, a redesign of the proposals has now taken place.

York-based DC Architecture worked with heritage practice Marcus Beale Architects.

Together, they produced a ‘modern’ medieval concept, influenced by the medieval timber framed buildings which once lined the street and still exist further down Micklegate by the Priory Church.

North Star has explained that the gabled roof reflects the form of nearby buildings and the vertical fins make the most of the curved façade.  Materials will include untreated timber and lime render to soften the form of the building and contrast with the brick of other properties on Micklegate.

Marcus Beale Architects specialise in historic and sensitive environments and have previously worked on several Oxford Colleges as well as Westminster Abbey Chapter House and Harrow School.

Hotel brand Wilde Aparthotels by Staycity will occupy the majority of the new building with a hotel. The Wilde brand offers high quality, studio and one-bed apartments to business and leisure travellers.

Staycity opened its first aparthotel in York in July 2016 next to the Barbican in Paragon Street.

A North Star spokesman said: “We have taken on board all the feedback from the previous designs and have gone back to the drawing board with the proposals.

“The new plans respect the historic setting and add new life to this magnificent street.

“The level of support to replace these buildings has been very encouraging, as many local people see them as detracting from the setting of Micklegate.”

A large commercial unit has also been included as part of the latest Micklegate plans, intended to create more street level activity at this location.  North Star said talks with a high profile occupier of this space are at an advanced stage.
