Facility to make life-saving medicines has official opening

A multi-million pound facility to meet increasing demand for life-saving medicines in the UK has been launched in Sheffield.

Dignitaries attended the official opening of B Braun Medical’s newly expanded centre.

The ‘revolutionary’ Compounding Aseptic Production Service (CAPS) Unit houses cutting edge equipment, cold stores, a laboratory, and an expanding team of specialists to manufacture medication for patients and hospitals throughout the UK.

The extension has seen the facility transformed from 1,080 sq m to 2,700 sq m, and will create employment to meet the need for a range of medicines, particularly intravenous feeding solutions for the NHS.

Sheffield City Region VIPs at the launch included the HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe; Lord Mayor of Sheffield Tony Downing; High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, John Pickering; Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Director – Policy and Representation, Richard Wright and the Master Cutler of Sheffield Nick Cragg.

Also present were senior personnel from B Braun, including new global Group Chief Executive Officer Anna Maria Braun; Matthias Kahl, Hospital Care Division Regional Head Western Europe and Gunther Lamparter, Senior Vice President Global Marketing & Sales Hospital Care.

Hans Hux, Chairman and Group Chief Executive, said: “Production of life-saving medicines is continuing to increase in Sheffield as a result of our revolutionary CAPS Unit.

“Since opening nearly a decade ago in 2010, our portfolio of products has evolved rapidly to include a whole new range of patient treatments. Expanding both the building size and our employee numbers will take us to the next level.

“We have developed from an organisation selling a just few instruments, to providing products in 16 to 18 different therapy areas in close collaboration with our valued partners in the national health service.

“Over the years we’ve created new employment and brought a number of new innovations to the healthcare market to benefit patients and healthcare professionals.

“Every day, thousands and thousands of people are treated and supported by our services and products.

“The new unit is of fundamental importance, not only for expanding our business and portfolio but also to provide important services to homecare patients in need of safe, life-supporting medication and nutrition.”

Anna Maria Braun said: “Opening this facility, inside of one of the core foundations of B Braun, shows how we grow from our own resources and how we grow together.

“It was around 20 years ago that we opened offices here in Sheffield, starting quite small, and today is a testament to the successful growth we’ve seen over these last two decades.

“It’s exciting to think about what the next 20 years will bring and I wish the entire team great success in continuing our mission to protect and improve the health of people around the world.

“I also would like to thank the employees here in Sheffield for their commitment and drive in making B Braun in the UK the success it is today.”
