Work starts on new £1.6m veterinary hospital

A former Wakefield office block is being transformed into a 9,000 sq ft state-of-the-art veterinary hospital.

The building, in Brindley Way, is being converted by Chantry Vets, which has around 20,000 clients and has outgrown its current premises in Alverthorpe. The work to transform the building is expected to be completed in early 2020.

The new hospital is expected to create a number of jobs for vets, veterinary nurses and receptionists.

It will feature five consultation rooms, kennels, separate cat and dog wards and will house modern equipment such as a new CT scanner, x-ray machine and endoscope.

Chantry Vets is part of York-based VetPartners, which is funding the new hospital – one of a number of major projects being commissioned by the UK-wide veterinary group, which is also behind new veterinary hospitals for Valley Vets in Cardiff and Woodcroft Vets in Cheadle, Cheshire.

Chantry Vets Surgical Director Lisa Flood said: “We are bursting out of the seams at our current site and desperately need more space to enable us to continue to provide the highest level of service and veterinary care.

“The new hospital will give us the opportunity to keep progressing and provide the best possible facilities.

“There will be huge benefits for the veterinary team as we will have more space in which to work and access to high-tech equipment.

“It will also benefit clients and their pets in the level of service we can provide.

“We have a talented team of vets and highly qualified nurses and, as well as first opinion work, we will be accepting referrals from neighbouring practices and other VetPartners practices.”

Flood will be among the vets to be based at the hospital. She has certificates in Surgery and Imaging and is working towards a further certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice.

She will be joined by Valeria Vastano, who has a certificate in Exotics, Beatriz Calvo, who is working towards a certificate in Endosurgery and Alastair McGuire, who is working towards a certificate in Ophthamology.

Chantry Vets’ main surgery in Alverthorpe will become a branch surgery.
