My Yorkshire: Lee Rhodes of Cardoe Martin

Lee Rhodes is a chartered building surveyor and is co-head of regional building surveying at Cardoe Martin, Sheffield. Appointed in January 2019, Lee’s remit is to the grow the business within the region.

Where do you live/where are you from?
I was born and live in Sheffield, but have worked for several years in London. Although I still undertake work and projects there, in my opinion there’s no better place than Sheffield, with access to the Peak District and great transport links. You can see why I am delighted the firm has recently established a fourth UK office in Sheffield.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
I’m an avid amateur cyclist and triathlete, so having the Peak District right on your doorstep is a huge advantage to living in Sheffield. It’s great to cycle around the Peaks and no better stop off point to have a coffee and cake than Monsal Head!

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
I’ve completed a lot of cycle events around the country, but never done the Coast to Coast off road route, so that is on my list.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
Living close to the Old Vicarage, Ridgeway is a real benefit- their menu is a delight with fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
Deep pockets, not to say I’m frugal.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.
Sheffield has more trees per person than any other European City.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
I’m a big music fan, so Pulp – Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley have been very influential to the music industry back in the day.

First experience of Yorkshire (for non-Yorkshire folk)
Yorkshire puddings with gravy and ‘Ayup duck’!

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
Travelling from one side of Sheffield to the other in rush hour.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
Well, it wouldn’t be the weather from Lancashire that’s for sure! Seriously, it would have to be some of the southern public funding.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
Nothing – it’s the gift that keeps on giving…
