Power station workers suspend planned 48-hour strike

Workers at Drax Power Station have suspended their 48-hour strike due to start on Sunday, while they vote on a new two-year pay offer.
The trade union Unite today said that its nearly 400 members at the Selby site will be recommended to accept the offer by Drax Power which is: From 1 Jan 2019 – a 2.8 per cent pay increase on all pay grades, including apprentice grades; From 1 Jan 2020 – a three per cent pay increase on all grades, including apprentices.
Unite regional officer Kelvin Mawer said: “Unite, along with the GMB union, will be recommending our members accept this offer.
“As a result, we have suspended the 48-hour strike due to have started on Sunday and our members will be working normally.
“Over the coming days we will hold meetings with our members to discuss the rationale behind the offer and why we are recommending acceptance.
“Dates for the electronic ballot will be announced as soon as possible and Unite won’t be commenting further until that ballot has closed.”
A Drax spokesman said: “We have continued to work closely with the unions – both sides want to find a resolution.
“We have put forward a further improved offer of 2.8% in 2019 with an increase from 2.8% to 3% in 2020, linked to contractual changes reflecting the flexibility required in the future, which union members will now vote on – the strike has been called off pending the outcome of the ballot.”
