The new library building at the centre of the £180m Barnsley regeneration project has opened over the weekend.

Library @ the Lightbox – a community hub and first new build of The Glass Works redevelopment – was officially opened  on Saturday.

The flagship facility, described as a “key milestone” of The Glass Works scheme and the “cornerstone of the new town centre” has four floors and will provide a range of digital services including virtual reality, a training suite and a range of innovative technology. The building also has a sanctuary room for people with autism.

The library’s events space will act as a multi-purpose venue able to hold large events, workshops and activities, while its rooftop terrace will offer views of the town centre as the regeneration edges towards completion.

Visitors will also have access to a range of health and wellbeing services including support for parents and counselling, as well as drop-in sessions with midwives and health visitors.
