Weekender: Popular eatery to open second venue

Marmadueks – one of Sheffield’s most popular local businesses – is opening a second store in the city’s transformative £470m Heart Of The City II scheme.

The Scandinavian-styled venue, complete with mezzanine and outdoor terrace next to HSBC on Cambridge Street, comes just days after Swedish fashion brands Monki and Weekday confirmed moves to the Heart Of The City II, providing the perfect blend of local and international in the new development.

The original Marmadukes café, which opened on Norfolk Row in 2012, will remain open for business as usual.

Hugely popular with Sheffield residents and workers, Marmadukes uses local, sustainable and ethical suppliers – such as Our Cow Molly – to make fresh coffee, salads, sandwiches and baked goods in house every day.

While still serving up its speciality coffee and homemade cakes, the new 1,500 square foot venue will have a stronger focus on its vegan and vegetarian offer as well.

Tim Nye from Marmadukes said: “We are proud to call Sheffield our home and are excited to be playing a part in the Heart of the City II regeneration scheme. It is a major development that will significantly transform this district of the city centre.

“We are a family-run business with a small but growing team. Our aim is to offer city centre visitors and weekday workers the best in British daytime food and drink. We are all incredibly passionate about what we do – something we believe is reflected in our café the moment you walk through our door.”

Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “This is more great news for Sheffield and our ambitious plans for a new centre that combines the very best new international retail with the local craftsmanship and passion of cafes like Marmadukes. Tim and Claire embody what we love about our city and what makes it such a great place to live, work and visit and we can’t wait to visit their new venue.”

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said:

“Marmadukes is one of Sheffield city centre’s best loved independents, so we are delighted that they are continuing to grow their business within the city centre.

“The plan for Heart of the City II is not just for the big banks and businesses but to give the scheme a beating heart of local energy. That is how we can say that the scheme is distinctively Sheffield and not like anywhere else. Businesses such as Marmadukes will compliment some of the bigger chains in the city centre perfectly.”

Jocelyn Holmes, Senior Leasing Manager at Queensberry, said: “Marmadukes has a brilliant reputation locally for serving high quality coffee and food in a stylish and stripped-back environment.

“Major companies and potential investors, such as HSBC, are all looking for something a little bit more bespoke from their surrounding offer these days. Having a café that is distinct to Sheffield, with a strong identity and focus on ethical ingredients, really appeals.”

Heart of the City II has momentum, with more occupier announcements in Grosvenor House anticipated soon, as well as construction getting underway on nearby Blocks B and C of the masterplan.

Proposals for the wider scheme include more modern workspaces, premium shops, urban homes, restaurants and cafes, stylish hotels and relaxing public spaces.
