Major milestone for new 72-bed hospital

A major milestone has been reached in the construction of  new 72-bed Foss Park Hospital on a 6.5-acre site in York.

Wates Construction has completed the topping out on site at Haxby Road, marking the uppermost point and progress made on site since construction commenced in October last year.

Representatives from Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, City of York Council, New Earswick Parish Council and P+HS Architects were on site to see the culmination of 250,000 hours so far spent on site. Completion is expected in April next year.

Located alongside the River Foss, the new hospital will provide two adult wards and two older people’s wards – one for people with dementia and one for people with mental health conditions such as psychosis, severe depression or anxiety.

Naomi Lonergan, TEWV’s Director of Operations for North Yorkshire and York said: “Foss Park is an exciting development and reaching this important milestone in the build means we are edging ever closer to completion of the hospital.

“It will provide access to high quality mental health care and offer cutting edge facilities that support our service user, families and carers with their care needs.

“We have worked with service users and carers from the start of this project to ensure the highest quality care environments and to build in learning from the experiences that have been shared with us.”

Construction of Foss Park was procured through YORbuild, a consortia of frameworks which are designed to create collaborative working to maximise the social value and inclusion of public sector building works.

David Wingfield, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction North East & Yorkshire, added: “Our delivery of Foss Park is a project where a great deal of focus, hard work, care and attention have gone into understanding our client’s vision so we can create a specialist hospital that accommodates these needs. We have done so while always seeking new ways to engage with the local community and our topping out is the perfect time to take stock of everything that has been achieved on site to date.”

Angela Rossi, Associate at P+HS Architects said: “ We are very proud to be part of the wider team delivering the new Foss Park Hospital. The contractor and client have worked in very close collaboration with stakeholders and the designers to maintain quality and timescales and we look forward to the successful completion of the project in Spring 2020. Congratulations to all involved in contributing to reaching this milestone on programme.”
