A disused working man’s club in York and the garden next to it could become 20 new apartments if planners give their approval.

The application has been submitted for the former New York Working Man’s Club, in Blossom Street, by York City Living. The club had operated for about 90 years but has been vacant since January this year due to dwindling membership.

York City Living, which now owns the Grade II listed building and garden, wants to convert the building into 11 flats and redevelop the land at the rear to provide a further nine one-bed apartments and studio flats within a three-storey block.

The development would also include the demolition of a modern extension at the back of the listed property

A design statement accompanying the application explains the proposal would return the site to its original residential use.

It adds: “The redevelopment of 22-26 Blossom Street will deliver 20 properties across the 0.05 ha site and represents a highly efficient use of land within the city centre. It will create 20 ‘entry level’ homes targeted towards first-time buyers or residents looking to downsize.

“The proposal involves the re-use of an existing building which has been underused for a number of years and currently lies vacant.

“From a heritage perspective, the proposal will secure the long-term future of the heritage asset by re-introducing the original use of the building and this is the major benefit of the scheme.

“On balance, the works to the listed building are deemed to be positive, and the proposed new build block to the rear is considered to enhance the setting of the heritage asset.”
