Nearly 400 extra seats planned for city’s community stadium

York Stadium Leisure Complex could get 399 additional seats if a new planning application wins permission.

This proposal has been submitted by City of York Council, and if approved it would take the total number of seats to more than 8,500. The current permission is for 8,113 seats.

The council has said the requested amendments will not affect the stadium’s construction timetable. The stadium project, which has previously been hit by delays, is due to be finished by the end of this year.

The venue is scheduled to host the semi-final matches of the Women’s Rugby League World Cup in 2021.

York Stadium Leisure Complex project, also known as York Community Stadium, is a council-led scheme to deliver a new football and rugby stadium.

Based at Kathryn Avenue in Huntington, the finished venue will feature an arena for York City FC and York City Knights RLFC, an IMAX cinema with 14 screens and a community hub, including a library and the offices for York’s sports clubs.

It will also include York Against Cancer retail unit and offices, NHS outpatient services, new swimming facilities, a gym, dance studio and a sports hall with spectator seating.
