Steel giant acquires business from administration

Bradford-based Barrett Steel, the UK’s biggest steel stockholder, has acquired the Shoreham site of John Parker & Son from administration.

The deal will see the £317m-turnover business expand its nationwide depot network; growing the 6th generation family steel business to 27 locations across the UK. The company said the deal also provided Barrett Steel with an ideal base to service and support customers in the South of England.

It also adds a bulk receipts port facility which “will offer greater flexibility as well as speed of supply to service UK customers.” The acquisition also sees Barrett Steel acquire extensive processing equipment.

Group Managing Director James Barrett said: “This acquisition allows the Group to develop its presence in the South of England which complements our existing processing hubs in the North. We are excited to welcome the Shoreham team to our business and are positive about the future of the steel industry.”

Barrett Steel will welcome over 50 new employees to their team. Expansion into the South of England is the latest of many investments for the Group in recent years. Barrett Steel has encouraged the development of its Scotland and Ireland businesses as well as investing heavily in state-of-the-art processing equipment and ensuring a modern and efficient transport fleet across its sites.

The acquired site will now operate as Barrett Steel Shoreham.
