Yorkshire manufacturing: An exciting future lies ahead

LEAN and innovative is the recipe for the future success of manufacturing in Yorkshire, according to experts.

Staying ahead of increasing competition from economies such as China is seen as the main challenge in the decades ahead.

And manufacturers in this region  are already responding by reviewing their processes to eliminate waste and investing in research and development.

Robin Watson, director for The Manufacturing Advisory Service Yorkshire, said: “Innovation can be new materials, new technology or new ways of working and new management systems. It’s about working smart.”

The future of the sector is considered in detail in a new free supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with DLA Piper available to download today.

The downturn in the UK economy has seen the number of people employed in manufacturing fall and forced companies to review all aspects of how they work.

Teresa Hitchcock, head of DLA Piper’s UK health and safety environment team based in Sheffield, said: “If a company is making sure there is less waste and it is using more resource then it can maximise its purchase costs, and there will be cost savings.”
