Call made for 'Manufacturing Minister'

THE next government should appoint a 'Minister of Manufacturing' to ensure the sector's heartlands such as South Yorkshire are allowed to flourish and can help the economy to prosper, according to the Master Cutler.
James Newman said the manufacturing sector also needed to be given "incentives", such as capital allowances, to enable companies hit by the recession to make investments in machinery and staff.

Of course, manufacturing continues to play a key role in the Yorkshire economy as a whole and South Yorkshire is one of it's heartlands. But don't forget that there are nearly twice as many people employed in manufacturing in West Yorkshire as there are in South Yorkshire and that as a city Leeds is the UK's second largest centre for manufacturing outside London. The sector makes a major contribution to the Leeds economy both in terms of output and employment.
