State of the Region 2012: Yorkshire can defy the gloom

YORKSHIRE’S business community has sent out a defiant message today as we publish the results of our State of the Region Survey.

Despite the forecasts for negligible growth in the UK economy in 2012, large numbers of companies in Yorkshire are expecting to grow, take on new staff and target new markets.

Indeed, despite the justified concern about the state of the economy there are real reasons to be optimistic about the region’s future.

The development of the green energy sector could trigger the kind of economic regeneration on the Humber that Aberdeen has enjoyed on the back of North Sea oil while Yorkshire is a frontrunner to secure the Government’s new Green Investment Bank.

Cranes are back on the region’s skylines with the Leeds Arena  set to be all but completed this year and retail developments in the shape of the Trinity Leeds scheme and a major overhaul for The Moor, in Sheffield, on track.

Despite fierce global competition, products and components made in Yorkshire continue to be sought after by customers around the globe looking for high specification and reliability.

Since our launch in 2007, TheBusinessDesk.com has looked to support the regional  economy by spotlighting successes and highlighting opportunities while never ignoring the realities of business life.

With a challenging year ahead it is more important than ever that the regional business community  as a whole pulls together, not only talking up their individual successes but also flying the flag for Yorkshire as a fantastic place to do business.
