Tetley transformation moves ahead

PLANS to turn the former Tetley’s brewery building in Leeds into a new arts space has taken a step forward with the appointment of a firm of architects to deliver the project.

Chetwood Architects is working with Arup to develop detailed plans to turn the site into a permanent base for contemporary art gallery Project Space Leeds.

Work is due to start in the autumn with the transformation expected to be completed by Spring 2013.

Simon Baker, director of Chetwoods Architects, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to work on this iconic scheme which will see the building continue to play a part in the cultural heritage of Leeds.

“Our aim is to design considered interventions and modern insertions to create a unique arts space that will significantly add to Leeds’ contemporary cultural landscape and allow the people of Leeds access to this special building for the first time.”

Carlsberg ceased production in Leeds last year and significant demolition of other buildings at the site has already taken place.

Leeds City Council has put forward broader plans to regenerate the area around the site including a new green space.
