ALLIED London is set to invest up to £10m as it looks to turn Clarence Dock into a home for independent traders, restaurants and digital businesses.

Work on the facelift is expected to start next year with the scheme formally relaunched in the summer of 2014 as it looks to capitalise on wider moves to regenerate the south bank area of Leeds.

Chief executive Michael Ingall said businesses in the revitalised Clarence Dock, to be renamed New Dock in a nod to its history, could eventually employ 1,000 people.

Thanks Paul for replying! I guess that make sense then. Personally I think that Clarence Dock is a more distinctive and memorable name but it looks like they are going for a rebrand, hence the change, Best wishes, Jospehine

Hi Josephine....Back in the olden days it was called New Dock, then renamed Clarence Dock. So it's a nod to its history, just one that uses the word 'new'.

I lived in Clarence Dock seven years ago for six months when I first came to Leeds. It was then and still is a really impressive space and there is something about it that is really special. But unless you live there you need a reason to go there. There needs to be a bigger idea then is being suggested by Allied London. It needs to be made into a real destination. For me the answer has to be linked to the Royal Armouries. Having a top tourist attraction in the mix should take the ideas to a different level. Maybe that is where they are heading with the grassed over area but it feels like they haven't had the 'Big Idea' yet.

How is renaming it 'New Dock' a 'nod to its history'? Seems more like a break from history! If they want to keep links with history why don't they just keep the existing name...?

I moved to the area (Brewery Wharf) about six years ago, my first night in my apartment had me attending a grand Clarence Dock launch party....I heard similar things then that I'm hearing now. I like the grassed area idea but the rest sounds like the same old thing. Once Trinity comes I think every major chain store and restaurant will be in Leeds so you will need something really original to bring people off Briggate and The Headrow. Even in it's minute heyday C.D couldn't do that, people didn't know where it was and those who did either didn't know how to get there or couldn't be bothered. It's amazing to see Brewery Wharf in the summer, the area is packed! You have Dock St. and a limited number of businesses in the area (Oracle helps) but you can't move for people! But Clarence Dock never came close to that. I still say it should be turned over to become a discount retail park like Junction 32, that way you can replicate big name stores but offer something different that people want. Of course, the parking would still need sorting out. It's not sexy but I'm sure it would work. I really hope The New Dock works out (if only for my house price) but it just seems to be in a Bermuda Triangle of a location.
