Haskins warns of "dreadful" consequences of renewables doubts

HUMBER Local Enterprise Partnership chairman Lord Haskins has urged the Prime Minister not to allow Tory backbench scepticism about support for renewable energy to undermine moves to make the region a hub for the offshore wind power generation industry.

He spoke out after the new Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, Owen Paterson, suggested subsidies could lead to a "Soviet-style system" where politicans make decisions that might be better taken by the market.

With regard to renewable doubts the Govt should also have its eye on the German experience where wind farms have proved to be much less efficient than anticipated. This has resulted in a rush to build more gas and coal fired stations to ensure a sustainable energy supply for future years. We need to be clear that we are aiming to find a long term energy solution not just create an expensive jobs programme.
