Historic hotel closes doors

STAFF have been made redundant at a Yorkshire hotel which is best known for being the birthplace of rugby league.

The George Hotel in Huddersfield has closed its doors after a buyer failed to come forward for the landmark building.

The hotel’s basement is home to the Rugby League Heritage Centre, which is separately owned and does not form part of the sale of the hotel. It is home to artefacts including jerseys, trophies, caps and medals.

A meeting at the hotel in 1895, which was built in 1851 and has 60 bedrooms, led to the formation of the Northern Rugby Football Union, which has developed into today’s Rugby Football League.

A statement from Colliers International, which is acting as the receivers, said: “On January 2 2013 the Royal Bank of Scotland appointed Jon Cookson and Nigel Nattress as Joint Law of Property Act Receivers of The George Hotel, Huddersfield.

“The hotel is no longer trading and staff and customers have been informed.”

Mr Cookson said the hotel had been on market for several months before its closure. Colliers International will now market the site with a guide price of £1.395m.
