Application submitted for Regent Street site

A PLANNING application has been submitted aimed at transforming a redundant site on Regent Street at a major gateway to Leeds city centre.

The application for a mixed-use development on the former Reg Vardy Renault dealership site includes a 2,043 sq m foodstore and 2,044 sq m of leisure facilities.

Gregory Projects has submitted the application to bring a national discount food store to the site alongside fitness centre Pure Gym.

Richard Tovey, director at Gregory Projects, said: “This site is at the heart of an area on the fringe of Leeds city centre which has witnessed a high population growth in the last few years, with 72,000 residents now living within a five-minute drive time, but there hasn’t been a corresponding improvement in food shopping and leisure facilities. Our research shows there is a particular need for a discount foodstore to serve the local community.

“The site has been vacant, despite a full marketing campaign, since September 2008 and is in danger of becoming eyesore. Not only will this development bring 50 jobs, a significant number of opportunities, but it will also help continue the regeneration of this area and provide key facilities to the residents and the local community.”

Gregory Projects recently won an industry award for its £50m Broad Street Plaza scheme in Halifax and is also credited for the success of the Foss Islands Retail Park in York, which was anchored by Morrisons.
