Law firms merge

TWO law firms have merged in a move they say will strengthen both brands.

Sheffield solicitors Taylor&Emmet has announced a tie-up with Bakewell firm Cockertons, which will see the latter become a division of Taylor&Emmet, widening the range of legal services available in the North Derbyshire market town.

Cockertons is to retain its own identity and client base and all 17 employees will remain at its Bridge Street offices.

Partner Richard Kay joins Taylor&Emmet’s board, while Michael Cockerton will act as a consultant, following his retirement at the end of last year.

John Outram, a partner at Taylor&Emmet, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Richard and his colleagues at Cockertons to the team. The two firms differ in size, but we share a common commitment to providing professional and personal legal services. We are both deeply rooted in the communities we serve and believe, together, we can develop a thriving business across Sheffield and the Peak District.”

Taylor&Emmet operates from headquarters on Arundel Gate in Sheffield, along with local branches in the Ecclesall Road area of the city and Dronfield.

Experts from its corporate and personal teams will be available to meet clients at Cockertons’ office, expanding the firm’s remit to include family law, personal injury and clinical negligence, as well as enhancing its current business legal services, residential conveyancing, probate work and general litigation.

Mr Kay said: “Although this merger sees us become part of a larger firm, it will not change the relationship we have with clients or our local focus. It will simply enable Cockertons to offer Bakewell and the surrounding areas professional advice on a much broader scale.”
