Highways project completed to serve luxury resort

CIVIL and structural engineering consultancy JPG has completed works on a £5m highways project to serve the much anticipated £100m Flaxby Country Resort and a new gateway business park near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

The Flaxby is a luxury hotel and leisure development situated on the site of the existing 27-hole Flaxby Park Golf course.  Set to become one of the biggest hotels in the North of England when completed in 2015, the development will also feature a luxury spa and gym, restaurants, bars and boutiques, totalling over 240,000 sq ft in size. It is expected to employ around 300 people when fully operational.

Flaxby Green Park is a proposed new 100 acre site which combines green technologies to offer high quality business space in a natural environment.  Design and build opportunities are currently available.

Leeds-based JPG was appointed by joint developers, Skelwith Group and Forward Investments to design and manage the delivery of a new roundabout and provide extra lanes on the A59 at Flaxby.  The brief also included preparation of land for the future widening of the A59 and A1(M) junction slip roads to facilitate new access to the five star luxury hotel and golf course.

Chris Harding, director at JPG said: “This was a major undertaking to provide new infrastructure critical to serve a significant increase of traffic flow to the new developments but also alleviate historical problem areas.  The widening of the A59 and the geometric arrangement for the large roundabout proved to be particularly challenging when considering the existing rural surrounding area of North Yorkshire.

“The new highway installation was a part of the route for Le Tour de France Grand Depart in Yorkshire which instigated crucial deadlines that our team needed to meet and of course it was quite rewarding the see the aerial view of the Peloton as it passed over the roundabout.”

K Rouse Civil Engineers was appointed as the contractor to deliver the installation designed by JPG.
