Making languages your business at Leeds Met

COURSES designed to enhance foreign language skills for business and in the workplace are set to get underway at Leeds Metropolitan University’s City Campus.

For just £270 for 26 weeks at two hours per week, the part-time beginners’ Languages for Work programme will run from Monday October 6 2014 in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German and Spanish. The courses have been specifically designed to contextualise a professional environment.

Open days are being held at Leeds Met – which on September 22 will become Leeds Beckett University – offering budding linguists and businesses who want to enrol staff members on a course the opportunity to find out more about the programme.

The open days will be held in Macaulay Hall, at the University’s Headingley Campus, from 12pm to 2pm and then 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday September 17 and from 11am to 4pm on Thursday September 25.

Adela Bond, principal lecturer in Languages at Leeds Met, said: “These new evening courses for beginners will conveniently take place in the Rose Bowl at our City Campus, allowing people easy access after work.

“The courses have been specifically designed to meet language requirements which will be of use in a professional environment, such as enquiring about services and facilities in a company or city, or organising a meeting including date, time and venue.

“Students will start to develop the language and vocabulary, as well as the cultural and business etiquette skills, needed to maximise export potential to enable them to communicate, build relationships and make connections in a global market.

“Learning a language allows you to develop a lifelong skill, whilst connecting with new people, colleagues and cultures. This programme is really worth investing in for professionals and businesses looking to improve their communication skills with colleagues and clients abroad and in the workplace.”

A range of other part-time language courses are also available, both at Leeds Met’s City and Headingley Campuses in the daytime and the evening. Whether you want to learn a language for the first time, or are looking to brush up on old skills, there are 15 to choose from. With more than 30 years’ experience to share, the languages are taught by experienced tutors – many of whom are native speakers of the languages they teach. In addition students can choose to receive a university award after every two full years of study successfully completed, including certificates, diplomas and BA degrees.
