Fire breaks out at former Leeds nightclub

FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a blaze at a Leeds city centre landmark building.

Crews from West Yorkshire Fire Service were called to the former Majestyk nightclub in City Square last night after receiving reports of smoke coming from the first floor.

The Grade II listed former Majestic cinema, later the Majestyk nightclub, has recently been refurbished.

The building, which has a stunning 21m diameter dome, originally opened in the 1920s as a 2,400 seat cinema with a basement restaurant and closed in 1969.

After a period as a bingo hall it opened as the Majestyk nightclub which closed in 2006.

West Yorkshire Fire Service said the fire had reached the roof space of the building.

“At 19:19 we received a call to smoke issuing from the Old Majestic Nightclub building,” it said in a statement.

“Crews were mobilised from Leeds and Hunslet Fire Stations, including an aerial appliance. This was a two storey building, the roof was heavily involved in fire.”
