Contractor chosen for £14m school build

A CONTRACTOR has been chosen to build the £14m school on the site of the former Don Valley athletics stadium in Sheffield.

BAM Construction, which has offices in Leeds, will create the facility for 1,200 pupils aged two to 16.

The single building will feature a four-storey secondary school, a two-storey primary school and a central hub to be used for events.

BAM says it will seek to use local suppliers where possible. The contractor recently built Shirecliffe and Fir Vale primary schools for Sheffield City Council.

BAM construction director Kelvin Pollard said: “It is great to build on our excellent relationship with the council on this prestigious job.

“We look forward to writing a new and exciting chapter in the history of the former Don Valley stadium site.

“We will use all our skills and experience to create a school the community can be proud of.”

Jackie Drayton, cabinet member for children, young people and families at Sheffield City Council, added: “We have been working incredibly hard with our partners to develop plans for this exciting new academy for two-to-16 year olds.

“It will be a fantastic place to learn for Sheffield’s children and young people for generations to come. We are looking forward to seeing building work begin, and ultimately, developing strong links with the community.”

BAM has just begun work on site, and the school will welcome pupils in September 2015.
