Lifestyle: The KP Club

OVER the past year, one of Yorkshire’s most highly-regarded golf clubs has been transformed into a thriving leisure resort.

The construction of 23 new woodland lodges has led to an impressive resort at the KP Club, in Pocklington near York, with stylish and contemporary accommodation, plus dining and the 18-hole golf course. The transformation project was only finished earlier this year, so it really is all shiny and new.  The team at the KP Club has grown to more than 50 and turnover is also forecast to grow by almost 50%, from £1.4m a year to £2m.

On a wintry Saturday evening, I headed over to the club to check it out and see if for myself. The club house was bustling with people who had clearly spent a leisurely day playing golf mixed with a few others who were having a night away.

Our lodge was one of the overnight stay rooms. Here, there’s a choice of double or twin rooms or a super king four-poster with exclusive use of the cedar clad hot tub. We stayed in the Huxtable room – equipped with the four-poster bed, plush sofas, and the hot tub. The lodges are extremely modern and very stylish and looking out the window on to the golf course – it’s a peaceful retreat in 180-acres of glorious woodlands.

We dined in the Club’s Glasshouse restaurant, overlooking the views of the Yorkshire Wolds. It’s one of those restaurants where if you want to dress up, go for it, if you’d rather a more casual evening, that’s fine, too. There was a mixture of both when we dined and even a birthday party taking place.

I had the plum tomato and baby mozzarella salad with toasted hazelnuts and basil oil dressing, followed by pan-fried cajun chicken with sweet potato wedges, fresh mixed salad and coleslaw. I finished off my meal with a chocolate and pecan nut brownie. My partner opted for a 1Ooz Yorkshire Sirloin Steak with thick cut chips, watercress, grilled tomato, a garlic field mushroom and peppercorn sauce, followed by apple and sultana crumble with vanilla custard.

The Vale of York is the upstairs restaurant that can accommodate private dining for 20 guests up to 67 for a more intimate dining experience.

The club markets itself for private and corporate events (there was birthday party taking place upstairs on this occasion) and it’s a popular wedding venue, too.

There’s also bike hire, an offsite mystery trail which can be organised, corporate away days and other events taking place. The boutique golf shop onsite specialises in premium golf clothing and golf equipment for men and women, from international brands such as Hugo Boss, J Lindeburg and Druh.
