Construction group wins £4.47m contract
BARDSLEY Construction Yorkshire has won a £4.47m contract from Calderdale Council to build a primary school at Halifax Academy.
On completion of the project in December 2015 for the start of the January 2016 term, the Academy will become the first ‘through’ school in Calderdale for pupils from the age of 4 to 16.
Bardsley Construction Yorkshire secured the contract via the YORbuild Framework, marking the first education-based project delivered through the Framework for Calderdale Council.
The two-storey primary school will consist of a 2,000 sq m steel frame building with teaching space, ICT and library rooms, a school hall, dining and kitchen facilities, hard and soft landscaping play and learning areas and car park.
Adrian Rooney, the Leeds-based regional director for Bardsley Construction Yorkshire, said: “This is a prestigious and genuinely exciting project to deliver what will be the first ‘through’ school in Calderdale. We will work in partnership with the Academy to engage them in all aspects of the construction programme, a key element of any work undertaken via the YORbuild Framework.”
Cllr Colin Raistrick, Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, added: “We know that the number of children needing school places in Calderdale is growing. The new primary school at Halifax Academy, which will cater for 420 primary school pupils, is just one of the ways we are addressing this.
“Learning at a ‘through’ school means pupils can maintain the relationships they have built with teachers and other students throughout their education, in a familiar environment.”
AHR Architects of Leeds designed the school building with a mix of materials including reconstituted stone, brickwork and aluminium curtain walls and windows. Structural and civil engineers are Furness Partnership and mechanical and engineering consultants are Novo Integration.
