Russell Crowe asks 1.7m people if it’s "a good idea" for him to buy Leeds United

HOLLYWOOD actor and director and Australian sports club owner Russell Crowe has given advice to the fans’ group that is seeking to buy a stake in Leeds United.

Mr Crowe, best-known for his role in Gladiator, has been in England to watch his rugby league team, the Australian champions South Sydney Rabbitohs, become the World Club Champions by beating last year’s Super League winners St Helens.

He is also a Leeds United fan and in replied to a message on Twitter from a fan, Sam Wild, asking him if he would buy the Elland Road club.

Mr Crowe replied in a message to his 1.7m followers and said: “Anybody else think this is a good idea?”, which has been retweeted by more than 2,500 people.

In separate messages to @LeedsFansLLP, the group supporting fan ownership of Leeds United, directed fans to a six-part documentary called South Side Story which covered the changes made at South Sydney Rabbitohs.

He finished by saying: “Every thought and every decision has to be about success on the field.”

Leeds United have had off-the-field distractions this year with owner Massimo Cellino being subject to drawn-out disciplinary action by the Football League that resulted in his disqualification and Mr Cellino’s announcement this week that he would not return as president when his ban runs out.
