Queen takes a seat from Yorkshire furniture firm

A YORKSHIRE furniture firm has been commissioned to make new seat for the Queen ahead of her visit to the county next month.

Dovetailors, based in Farsley near Leeds, is working on the project with architects Thomas Moor and Sheffield Cathedral, where the Queen will attend this year’s Maundy Thursday service.

David Wilson, creative director of Dovetailors, said the chair was being manufactured using English oak and Sheffield stainless steel. Three ceremonial chairs will be made in the same style, one of which will be used by the Queen.

“The cathedral felt it was very important to incorporate steel from Sheffield and to have the chair made here in Yorkshire,” said Mr Wilson.

“It has also been designed to be in keeping with the cathedral’s Gateway Project, which we have also been involved in.”

The cathedral’s Gateway Project marks its centenary and has involved extensive refurbishment of the interior of the building. Dovetailors manufactured a number of specialist pieces including a new solid oak organ plinth with finger-jointed corners.
