Digital and health sectors under discussion for Estonian trade links

LEEDS City Region has welcomed a delegation led by the Estonian Ambassador on a two-day visit to explore the potential for bilateral trade and investment.

The Eastern European country has particular specialisms in digital and health which led the recently-appointed ambassador to make the destination of his first official delegation outside London to be Leeds City Region, because of the potential for complementary business services.

Ambassador Lauri Bambus and a group of Estonian businesses have been meeting with representatives from the city region’s health and innovation, green technology and financial technology sectors, as well as higher education.

Mr Bambus said: “We would like to find more opportunities in different fields. We are in Leeds to find the corporate partners in fintech, greentech and health services to discover what kind of developments you have here.

“I hope that after two days that people from Estonia will reflect this information back and people in Leeds – Leeds and Partners and the other representatives – get more from our people as well and they might find Estonia an attractive place to come to.”

Lurene Joseph, chief executive of Leeds and Partners, which is leading on the visit, added: “Over the last three years our strategy has focused on identifying and developing the clear sector strengths of Leeds and the wider region in order to deliver measurable economic growth.

“This visit from the Estonian Ambassador and broader engagement with Estonian businesses in the fintech and health and innovation industries reinforces our approach and offers the opportunity to drive potential inward investment and jobs into the region from businesses looking to expand their operations into the UK.”
