Seven days, seven stories: A round-up of this week’s Yorkshire news

Yorkshire firms just can’t seem to be able to help themselves sticking their oars in other regions.

Well-known and well-smoked Red’s True Barbecue has announced their expansion into London , after already opening in Manchester and Nottingham, and their growth seems set to continue.

Crawshaws, the listed butcher which still has a stall at Leeds’ Kirkgate Markets, bought out a North West rival for £4m.

Another entrepreneurial business bringing the Yorkshire brand to the rest of the UK is gym chain Xercise4Less, which has opened another branch in the North East , continuing its storming of the North.

Morrisons and Leeds United of course cannot be left off this roundup, as its not all been good news among the region’s biggest brands.

Embattled supermarket Morrisons announced hundreds of job cuts at HQ, but counteracted that by announcing thousands of jobs in store , and analysts say chief executive David Potts is making the difficult decisions now, so that Morrisons has a brighter future.

Leeds United’s struggles were laid bare on their financial sheets, with disparaged owner Massimo Cellino declaring that they were in a “perilous state”.

The club more than doubled its pre-tax losses to £20.3m while revenues fell 11% to £25.3m, and has also been hit by a lawsuit from their shirt sponsors. Financial Fair Play rules stipulate that Championship clubs are permitted only £8m in losses, or £3m if the club’s owner does not inject equity – so it’s anyone’s guess what’s going to happen at the Yorkshire football club.

It’s been a week of departures across the business scale, from that of Dutch operations manager Casper Meijer at Morrisons, to Di Burton exiting Cicada, which TheBusinessDesk.com broke way back on Monday.
