York stadium project delayed by lack of signings

THE £37m York development that includes a community stadium to be home to the city’s professional football club has been delayed.
Kick-off at the new stadium in Huntington had been scheduled for August 2016, the start of the 2016-17 season, but City of York Council has said that delays to signing contracts will result in a later completion.
The 8,000-capacity stadium project has a 62-week timetable, which means the first game is unlikely to be held until 2017.
York City FC said the delay “will not affect the £2m loan from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, the Football Club’s relationship with the Football League and any agreement with Persimmon”.
In a statement, it said: “Although some may be slightly frustrated that the club will not be in a position to move into the new stadium for the start of the 2016/17 season, ensuring the future development is built correctly is crucial in providing a fantastic new home for York City for decades to come.
“York City Football Club remain heavily involved at the forefront of the Community Stadium project, and as part of the successful GLL bid will be running the stadium, so are able to maintain a keen focus upon the aspirations of our supporters for the new home of the Club, working closely with other core stakeholders in order to deliver the stadium that we all desire for sport in York.”
The development will also have community facilities, including a library, swimming pool and health centre.
