Plans unveiled for Hull’s £25m UK City of Culture revamp

PLANS have been released for Hull’s £25m public realm project, which will see the redesign of the city’s streets and public spaces as it prepares to take on the UK City of Culture crown in 2017.

Leeds-based Re-Form Landscape Architecture will be involved in the redesign, and were appointed alongside engineering consultancy Arup by Hull City Council.

They will work with the council, construction consultancy, Gardiner and Theobold, and public art specialists, Beam, to design and deliver the first two phases of the project.

It will be the first major redevelopment of the city centre since the Second World War, and includes 14 streets and 4 public squares
Andrew Price, director at Re-Form Landscape Architecture, commented: “This is an ambitious and exciting scheme that will completely redefine the way in which local people and visitors experience the public spaces in Hull city centre. It’s great to be collaborating with so many creative people on such a complex project. It’s rare that a city puts so much investment into its public realm, and yet it’s these spaces that really make a city work.”

City major projects manager for Hull City Council, Garry Taylor said: “These plans are the most fundamental and far-reaching the city has seen in over 70 years and will help to move our city into the 21st century, whilst respecting our wonderfully strong heritage. It is essential that we are ready, not just for our year in the spotlight as UK City of Culture 2017 but beyond this; creating a legacy that has tangible benefits to the city and its residents.

“We know that investment into these key areas is imperative to securing a prosperous future and this Capital investment will increase visitors, helping to create much-needed jobs for the area”.

Re-Form Landscape Architecture currently is working on a number of high profile public realm schemes across the UK including a new city square on Sovereign Street in Leeds, a new public square in Lichfield and a masterplan for the University of Lincoln.
