200 jobs to go as Fortune 500 giant plans print factory closure

RR DONNELLEY, an American printing giant with annual revenues of £7.7bn, has announced plans to close its North Yorkshire factory with the loss of around 200 jobs.
The Fortune 500 company has been in Yorkshire for around 35 years after buying printing firm Ben Johnson. The company was based in York before moving to its current location in Flaxby Moor in 2000.
The UK business which includes the Yorkshire site, RR Donnelley UK Directory, specialises in telephone directories and commercial catalogues.
Its most recent accounts, for 2013, showed a pre-tax loss of £2.54m which was mainly caused by contributions to the pension scheme deficit, although it also made a small operational loss.
Turnover was £28.3m, having been above £40m just two years previously and as high as £94m in 2006 before a company restructure took place.
RR Donnelley is restructuring again, undergoing what it has dubbed a “transformative separation” that will see the global group split into three standalone businesses.
In a statement, the company confirmed its plans to close the site by the end of the year.
It added: “We will now enter into a process of consultation with our employees and their representatives and ensure that we fully meet our obligations in this respect.
“We will attempt to support and provide reasonable assistance through the process.”
