Former accountant launches gin brand in Harrogate

ARTISAN gin makers Slingsby, founded by former Deloitte accountant Marcus Black, have launched their first retail site at Montpellier Parade in Harrogate.

The site, dubbed the Spirit of Harrogate, is the home of Slingsby in Yorkshire and comes as the company celebrates the sale of 2,000 bottles of gin in its first eight weeks.

Marcus Black was a qualified chartered accountant at PwC anSlingsby Gind investment director at Lloyds Development Capital. He co-founded Slingsby after a spell as joint managing director at Intercontinental Brands.

Managing director Mr Black said: “We’re delighted to be opening the doors to Spirit of Harrogate’s very own retail experience whilst marking such a celebratory milestone for Slingsby.

“Slingsby Gin was developed by looking at things differently and its home, Spirit of Harrogate, certainly reflects this. With ambitious growth plans, the next stage is to feed out Slingsby nationally and we look forward to welcoming gin lovers to our unique offering, sharing with them a truly wonderful Slingsby Experience.”

Slingsby is named after William Slingsby, who in 1571 first lauded the restorative properties of Harrogate’s natural spring water.

17 of Slingsby’s 24 botanicals have been grown in Harrogate’s Rudding Park Hotel Kitchen garden with ingredients including Yorkshire rhubarb, Green and Jasmine Tea from Taylors of Harrogate. Plants from Rudding Park include Sweet Cicely, Primrose and Thyme.
