Aerospace manufacturer enters administration

A MANUFACTURER that has been in business for over 55 years has slipped into administration.

Glenborough Engineering (GE), which has worked with the likes of of Toyota and the Lear Corporation, has appointed Keith Cottam and Gareth Self of Restart BTi as joint administrators.

Glenborough Engineering as established in 1961. The company initially operated from a small workshop on Glenfield Square. Primarily the company attracted work from the local knitwear industry, within a few years becoming turnkey suppliers of knitting machines.

Following the move to a new, bigger location on Station Road the company started work for bigger clients, such as Crossfield Electronics, Pegsons and NNC (National Nuclear Company). This location was then expanded to the facility next door which makes up the current precision engineering workshop.

The growth in machining gave rise to the purchase of Semi-Automatic lathes in 1986. It wasn’t until 1988 when Ernie Chambers acquired the company that the first CNC machines were installed. In 1994 the introduction of a small design team gave them the capability to take on their first design and manufacture of special purpose machines, predominantly for the automotive industry.

In 1998 GE entered into a partnership with Toyoda Gosei supplying injection moulding and door sealing machinery. This involved re-engineering the Japanese designs to comply with European legislation. Over a two year period GE delivered over 50 machines into Toyoda’s UK plant.

Between 1989 and 2002 GE became involved in experimental work for the MRI scanner involving Sir Peter Mansfield relating to second generation machines with improved acoustic performance.

2010 saw GE working closely with UYT supplying jigs and tooling to be installed into its existing Robotic Production lines. This work quickly accelerated and by 2011 GE was producing turnkey solutions from whole robotic cells to tooling and fixtures for various automotive clients.

The company’s directors at the time of going into administration were named as Ernie Chambers, Sheila Chambers and Neil Geeson.
